The THEMIS instruments of one satellite are taken to another facility for the electromagnetic compatibility testing. Not all instrument testing can be performed at the Space Sciences Laboratory (SSL) at the University of California in Berkeley. For this test, all the THEMIS instruments are mounted on a platform that mimics their position on the real satellite. Then they are carefully wrapped while still in the clean room to make sure that no dust or other contaminations ruin the instruments and electronics. Then this platform of instruments is carefully moved onto a special shock-absorbing platform. The entire package is then lifted carefully into a sports utility vehicle to be cautiously driven to a laboratory about 30 miles away.
