THEMIS Magnetometer Installation at Carson City
Large rock with Laura's foot next to it for scale
We put a large rock (shown above) next to the magnetometer sensor. Laura's foot is next to the rock for scale. Then David said that many rocks around this area have iron (Fe) in them and that could cause a problem with the sensor. So to test this, we lifted the rock up and down in a periodic motion with one up and down (one period) taking about 3 seconds. David came running out saying: "There is something strange happening with the magnetometer - is that you?" Indeed! The rock must have had iron and moving up and down produced some very nice waves in the data seen on the computer monitor inside the observatory.
