THIS SPECIAL EDITION OF SOLAR WEEK 2003 WILL BE HELD
NOV 17-21

IF YOU ARE INTERESTED AND HAVEN'T REGISTERED FOR SOLAR WEEK BEFORE PLEASE REGISTER NOW.

You are currently logged on to the website for Solar Week. This site is intended to spark pre- and early teen girls' interest in pursuing careers in science through the study of recent solar physics discoveries. As an extension to our education and public outreach activities, we at the Lockheed Martin Solar Astrophysics Lab invite you to take part in our online week of activities.

The set of daily activities will be self-contained, so participation can be carried out on a day-to-day basis depending upon your schedule. One of the great strengths of this project is the interaction with real scientists who have first hand knowledge of the various topics which make up Solar Week. These activities will also be available after the period chosen for Solar Week, without real-time interaction with scientists.

Our Mission

Our mission is to increase the numbers of women pursuing carrers in the physical sciences. Our hope is that this website will expose young girls to possibilities that they might not have considered, and help develop their interest in taking advanced math and science courses.

  • A related life science topic
  • Information for teachers
  • Links to related sites and topics

The week will culminate on Friday with an online Q&A session with several scientists. Girls will be able to interact with solar physicists and find out what it is really like to be a woman in the physical sciences.

How to Use This Site

This website is designed as a week-long unit. Each day covers a different topic. Therefore, it is recommended that teachers study the site ahead of time, paying particular attention to each day's activity and materials necessary to complete the activity. Also, instructors interested in having students participate in the daily game will probably want to survey the game ahead of time. Links to resources for teachers who might desire in-depth information will be listed with each topic.
